Are Countries Doing Enough to Support Disabled People?

Depending on where you live in the world, there are certain countries which offer different types
of aid for disabled people. Most countries recognize that they have a degree of responsibility to
take care of people who have disabilities and provide them with the support that they need to be
able to lead rich and full lives.
After all, there are many disabilities which are life changing. They affect a person in many
different ways. Somebody who has a mobility issue, for example, cannot interact with the world
in the same way as an able-bodied person. They have to consider which areas of society are
accessible for them and which are not.
Now, there are some governments around the world which are very generous when it comes to
supporting the disabled population living within their borders. However, there are others who are
not. It largely depends on the type of healthcare system which is in place as well as the benefits
system available for disabled people. Some people are entitled to financial support for their
disability, whereas others get access to subsidized healthcare.
The disparity for this type of support becomes evident when we consider they’re not every
country is equal. What happens if somebody is born into a country where healthcare is not free?
If they have to pay for healthcare, how will the family of the disabled person, and the disabled
person themselves ever manage to afford the equipment that they need to enjoy a rich and full
life? Even the most basic of equipment needed for everyday life could cost thousands, and this
will ultimately mean that many families can afford to help disabled family members, even when it
would drastically improve the quality of life.
This is something which we are very passionate about, because we believe that it should not be
down to the random lottery of a place where a person is born that determines whether or not
they get access to basic medicine or equipment which allows them to live a normal life. As a
concept, that seems grossly unfair, and it does open up a lot of uncomfortable moral questions
about how we treat disabled people in societies around the world.
Ultimately, our belief is that there should be a universal system in place to help everybody in the
exact same way. People should get equal opportunities to access subsidized healthcare and
equal opportunities to be given financial support in order to live. As a society, we will be judged
based on how we treat the most disadvantaged members of the world, and in most cases that is
disabled people. If we want to create a lasting society which is positive for everybody, then we
have to consider how we make changes to existing structures and ideas in order to support
everybody.
The next time you go to the hospital or the local community, see how disabled people are living
their lives. Does it seem like they have the same support as you? If not, perhaps it may be time
to consider why not.
